Wind energy systems have been used for centuries to pump water and grind grain. On a large scale they are presently the lowest cost renewable energy source for producing electricity. Wind turbines are installed on various types of towers. The taller the tower the better the output from a wind turbine. Wind resources are very site specific, although general wind maps are available for reference.

Although wind energy systems have become quite reliable, they are mechanical devices that require periodic maintenance for long life. The majority of small wind turbines are maintained by the owner, as qualified service people are not always available in the area.

Wind energy systems can be either stand alone, with energy storage in the form of batteries, or the direct utility interie type. Direct utility interie is the simplest and most efficient, but does not allow power production when the utility is down.
